Horse Worming Programme

All forms of equine should have a worming programme.

All horses including new arrivals should be wormed based on the previous worming history, if known.

For equines with an unknown worming history it would be advisable to treat for encysted small red worm and common worms with either a five day course of of a Febendazole wormer or a single dose of of a Moxidectin wormer.

Gastrointestinal nematodes are controlled by regular dosing from Spring until Autumn, every 6-13 weeks, depending on the horse wormer, eg: Bimectin, Eraquell, Eqvalan or Equest.

Example of a General Horse Worming Programme

February
All stages of encysted and inhibited small redworms and migrating, large strongyles
(Panacur Equine Guard 5 day course, or Equest)

March
Tapeworms
(Single dose: Equimax, Eqvalan Duo, Equest Pramox, Equitape)
(Double dose: Strongid-P, Pyratape-P, Embotape)

April – August
Small redworms, large strongyles, hairworms, lungworms
(Equest, Eraquell, Bimectin, Eqvalan, Panacur, Strongid-P, Pyratape-P, Embotape)

September – October
Tapeworms
(Single dose: Equimax, Eqvalan Duo, Equest Pramox, Equitape)
(Double dose: Strongid-P, Pyratape-P, Embotape)

November
All stages of encysted and inhibited small redworms and migrating large strongyles
(Panacur Equine Guard 5 day course, or Equest)

December - January
Bots (Equest, Eraquell, Bimectin, Eqvalan, Panacur)
Migrating large strongyle larvae
(Strongid-P, Pyratape-P or Embotape)

It is advisable to worm pregnant mares before foaling to reduce intestinal threadworm and other worm species being transmitted to the foal; lactating mares and foals from 2 weeks of age. Always check the proposed horse wormer is suitable for the purpose and situation of your horse or foal. When worming elderly horses, care should be taken and if necessary consult with a veterinary professional, especially if the history of the horse is unknown.
